Freedom
From Addiction
Our Goal:
Our communities encourage and support lifestyles free from
alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse. Adults model responsible
behaviors and families learn the skills needed to raise strong,
resilient, healthy children.
Substance abuse
is a problem for citizens of all ages; however, habits regarding
smoking, drinking, and drug use begin at a young age. 90%
of adult smokers started their tobacco use as youth, and almost
40% of those who start drinking before age 14 will develop
alcohol dependence later in life (compared to only 10% of
those who wait until age 21 or older). An alarming 44% of
local high school students show a high risk for “intention
to use drugs” and 44% exhibit favorable attitudes toward
drug use. In addition, 49% feel that laws and norms are favorable
toward drug use.
Kids base their
choices on a host of factors – adult role models, family
norms, social acceptance of behaviors, perceived peer norms,
and availability of alternative activities. It is critical
for our communities to make healthy choices, and work together
to build a society that rejects substance abuse, provides
skills training for families, and creates positive role models
for children.
The following projects
are collaborative efforts in the MDI region that are helping
individuals, families, and communities develop the skills
and resources to remain free from addiction. Please visit
the resources section of this
website for more information on the scope of local substance
issues. Healthy Acadia offers many services
to help our communities reach the freedom from addiction goal,
including: assistance in policy development, signs for tobacco-free
spaces, assistance to health care providers in developing
tobacco screening protocols, and more – contact
