Local
Food Connections Task Force
The Local Food
Connections Task Force, convened by Healthy Acadia and the
MDI High School Sustainable Agriculture Project, brings together
community members and organizations that are interested in
increasing access to locally-produced foods and building strong
local food systems on Mount Desert Island and in surrounding
communities. The task force serves as a forum for community
members to come together and network, share data and resources,
and work collaboratively on local food system initiatives
including composting, service learning projects, food storage,
and more. Many local foods initiatives have emerged from this
task force, including the farm-to-school project, and the
MDI High School Sustainable Agriculture Project.
Recently the task
force was awarded a small grant from MDI Tomorrow to upgrade
the root cellar at the College of the Atlantic for use by
Beech Hill Farm, the COA kitchen, MDI High School, and other
local organizations. Task force members hope that this resource
will help in the effort to build community food security,
and meet local food needs.
Organizations represented
on the task force include: Bar Harbor Marine Resources Committee,
Beech Hill Farm, College of the Atlantic, Hancock County Planning
Commission, Hancock County Time Bank, Healthy Acadia, Healthy
Life Cafe, and the MDI Housing Authority.
Some of the task
force's meeting notes are posted on the MDI
Tomorrow website.
